over the world every year. Celebrations like the Oktoberfest are very common in the area around Munich: They are called“ Volksfeste”( Popular festivals) and can be found all summer long in some parts of the city and its surroundings, even though they are of course much smaller than the big Oktoberfest.
In the field of music, one can find almost every kind of music there is: From classical music in the big concert halls and operas to a wide range of concerts every weekend and different festivals in summer like the well-known Tollwood festivals with local as well as international artists( e. g. Damien Marley, Manu Chao or Ska-P). Munich was one of the first cities in Germany where Techno and Electronic Music evolved and in the 1980s and early 1990s it was also a pioneer in Hip Hop and Graffiti culture.
Especially in summer Munich has lots to offer: All over the city there can be found a lot of parks. The biggest of those is the English Garden, which is one of the biggest parks in the world and is even bigger than the central park in New York. In the park there is a small river with a wave where surfers can be found in the middle of the city – something quite unique in the world. Inhabitants of the city like to go the parks to do sports, enjoy the sun and hang out with friends. Another popular spot is the Isar, the river which is flowing through the city and which also offers lots of green spaces along its flow. Close to Munich, in the south of the city, are a lot of lakes where one can go swimming and the Mountains of the Alps where it is possible to go hiking in summer and skiing or snowboarding in winter.
Munich is home to Bayern Munich, the most popular and successful football team in Germany and one of the biggest and most successful teams in Europe. Some of the best football players of the German history played at that club( e. g. Beckenbauer, Mueller, Matthaeus, Kahn or Schweinsteiger). Since 2005 the team plays in the new stadium for 71.000 spectators in the north of the city. There is also the Team of 1860 Muenchen which plays in the second division and the third division team of Unterhaching.
