Ryan was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. His father, Jim, is a food wholesaler, and his mother, Tammy, is a retail salesperson. He is of Irish ancestry and was raised as a Roman Catholic. He is the youngest of four brothers. Two of his older brothers work as police officers in British Columbia, one of whom is a Royal Canadian Mounted Police member. Ryan's career began in 1990 when he starred as "Billy" in the Canadian-produced teen soap Hillside, distributed in the U.S. as well. His notable movie appearnces are in the TV movie Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Waiting..., Just Friends, Definitely Maybe, The Proposal, Blade: Trinity, Adventureland, The Amityville Horror, Van Wilder, The In-Laws, Smokin' Aces, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Green Lantern, and Safe House.
His notable series roles are in Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place, the second season finale of Scrubs, and an episode of the sitcom My Boys.
In 2008, Ryan wrote for The Huffington Post regarding his plan to run the New York City Marathon for his father, who suffers from Parkinson's disease. Also that year and again in 2009, he appeared in People's "Sexiest Man Alive" lists, and was awarded the top honor in 2010. In 2011 he was ranked #15 on People's "Most Beautiful list."
In 2002, Ryan began dating Canadian artist Alanis Morissette. The two announced their engagement in 2004 but broke it off in 2007. Alanis's representative said the song "Torch" was written about Ryan. Soon after their break up, Ryan began dating actress Scarlett Johansson. The couple married in 2008 and filed for divorce in 2010. Three months after Ryan's divorce was finalized, he began dating his current wife Blake Lively.
