Blake Ellender Brown was born in Tarzana, California to actor Ernie Lively and his wife, Elaine. Blake and her four older siblings/half-siblings were raised as Southern Baptists. She has an older brother, Eric, two half-sisters, Lori and Robyn and a half-brother, Jason. Both of her parents and all of her siblings are, or have been, in the entertainment industry.
Blake began her acting career at age 11, when she appeared in the 1998 film Sandman, directed by Blake's father. Her notable film roles since were in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 1 and 2, Accepted, Elvis and Annabelle, New York I Love You, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, and Savages. Blake rose to fame intenationally for her role as Serena Van Der Woodsen in the CW teen series Gossip Girl.
Blake describes herself as a cook and Martha Stewart is her idol. She baked a cake during an episode of The Martha Stewart Show.
She attended a workshop at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. In 2010, Blake spent an evening working as a pastry chef at Per Se in New York City. In 2011, she created a s'mores cupcake to be sold at Sprinkles bakeries. She has remarked that when traveling she takes cooking classes to immerse herself in the local culture. Blake spoke publicly of her desire to become a restaurateur.
Blake dated Kelly Blatz from 2004–07; the two had been friends since childhood. Blake dated actor Penn Badgley from 2007 to 2010. She dated actor Leonardo DiCaprio for seven months until October 2011, when she started dating husband Ryan Reynolds.
