Dr . Lisa Barkley Speaks at Pac-12 Health Equity Summit
Dr . Lisa Barkley , Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Associate Dean of Diversity , Equity , and Inclusion for CDU , was a speaker at the Pac12 Health Equity Summit which took place late January . The two-day event , titled “ Race , Gender , Identity & Accessibility Matters in Collegiate Athlete Health ,” examined the delivery of athlete healthcare through the lens of diversity , equity , and inclusion .
“ I really want to thank the Pac12 for putting on this presentation ,” said Dr . Barkley . “ This is the first time I ’ ve been in a meeting that has addressed these issues to this degree . They have demonstrated that they ’ re really all in on us . As a provider for all these years , it ’ s very special – and I thank you for that .”
In her presentation , “ Provision of Care with Diverse Patients ,” Dr . Barkley goes into depth about the issues related to African American / Black athletes . Issues such as representation , lack of academic support , racism , and social environments .
“ We know from evidence that social issues are going to play a bigger role than anything else in our health outcomes ,” said Dr . Barkley . “ And when you look at disparities in African American athlete health , that ’ s really the tip of the iceberg . Those disparities are really driven by all these other factors : the policies , the economic systems , the social hierarchies , and for this group racism and the many different forms is at the heart of that .”
The Health Equity Summit took place at the Meyer & Renee Luskin Conference Center at UCLA and featured a dynamic lineup of panel discussions , with medical professionals and institutional faculty providing critical insight into effective methods of healthcare delivery .
