Health Fair Benefits Students and Community
The Mervyn M . Dymally College of Nursing ’ s ( MMDCON ) Bachelor of Science in Nursing ’ s ( BSN ) Cohort 1 hosted a weekly health fair on campus over several months aimed to encourage healthy lifestyles , prevent and manage disease , and connect patients to the right resources .
The students who staffed the fair provided free services such as blood pressure checks , body mass index evaluations , nutrition information , stress management and weight management tips , and information on COVID-19 testing and vaccines .
“ My experience to say the least has been fulfilling and awesome ,” shared MMDCON BSN Cohort 1 student , Somtoochukwu Muonagor .
“ My favorite parts were the education , follow ups , constant teaching and reassurance , as it gave an insight to what goes on in the community regarding one ’ s health and how constant education is needed no matter how little .”
The clinic was held during the months of February , March , and April and attracted both the CDU Campus community and the surrounding residential community .
“ It ’ s making an impact , most especially to the CDU community . Most of them , like the students or the employees , didn ’ t know that they were having issues when it came to their blood pressure , and it ’ s only now that they ’ re finding out ,” said CDU Adjunct Professor Corazon Mapanao . “ After monitoring it for the last few weeks , they ’ re realizing that they may need to check with their doctor because they did not know that their blood pressure was going up .”
This was the first on-campus health fair hosted by BSN Cohort 1 and provided a great opportunity for the health sciences students to receive hands-on experience with the Los Angeles community .

• The Mervyn M . Dymally School of Nursing has officially been renamed as the Mervyn M . Dymally College of Nursing ( MMDCON ).
• Dr . Monica Soni , CDU Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine , has been named the new Chief Medical Officer of Covered California .
• CDU ’ s Mobile Health Unit was at Spring Fest LA 2023 providing free COVID-19 vaccines , boosters , and tests , as well as HIV rapid oral testing , blood pressure testing , and cholesterol screenings .
• CDU received a $ 4,000 research award at the HBCU Engage event in Nashville , Tennessee for research on the effects of third-hand smoke on children .
• The 39th Annual Commencement Ceremony will take place on Saturday , June 3 , 2023 at Los Angeles Southwest College Stadium . Click here to RSVP .
