Safeguarding the Community : Charles R . Drew University ' s Successful COVID Testing Initiative
CDU ’ s robust policy of testing all visitors to the campus during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be a successful tool for keeping the CDU Community as safe as possible during the historic public health emergency . This was achieved through tireless efforts undertaken by dedicated staff members who administered well over 60,000 tests during the 2021-2022 academic year .
Led by Dr . Delia Santana , CDU ' s Associate Provost of Academic Services and Campus Nursing Officer , the testing protocol encompassed symptom checks , testing , screening , and case follow-ups , along with inventory and supply management . Initially starting with just two staff members , the team expanded to include a total of eleven individuals , including two Registered Nurses ( RNs ) and several Medical Assistants .
CDU ' s testing initiative commenced with PCR tests , providing accurate results but with longer wait times . However , when rapid test kits became available , the university promptly switched to this efficient method , which yielded results within a mere 15 minutes . Each individual was required to undergo rapid testing and receive clearance before entering any of the campus buildings , ensuring the highest level of safety for everyone present .
Moreover , CDU diligently upheld a strict policy of compliance with COVID-19 vaccination requirements for eligible individuals . This additional measure further bolstered the safety of the campus community , reducing the risk of virus transmission and fostering an environment conducive to teaching , learning , and research . Through their diligent efforts , the university prevented approximately 200 individuals from unknowingly accessing the campus while infected with the COVID-19 virus .
