She entered the medical field to be an advocate for patients and aid in bettering their physical health . “ I believe that medicine and advocacy go hand in hand ,” shared Dr . Eugenio . “ I wanted to use my platform as a physician to lobby for policies that affect systematic changes in medicine and ensure health justice for my community .”
Dr . Eugenio ’ s desire to continue her medical education at an institution that valued diversity and inclusion led her to CDU . “ I wanted to train at an institution where diversity and inclusion would be at the forefront of my training ,” said Dr . Eugenio . “ I knew CDU would lay the foundation for my understanding of racial , ethnic , and socioeconomic disparities that contribute to health equity and outcomes .”
She recalls her time at CDU with appreciation for the training environment . “ We were afforded the opportunity to train with some of the most advanced technologies and work with physicians that emphasized compassionate , holistic care and evidence-based medicine ,” said Dr . Eugenio . “ CDU students often aim to work in an urban underserved setting , and as such our training intimately cross-examines barriers to health and challenges us in creating strategies to advocate for our patients .”
The message she sends to current and future medical students is to stay encouraged during their journey . “ Your medical training will simultaneously be one of the most difficult yet fulfilling periods in your career ,” advised Dr . Eugenio . “ Give yourself grace during the challenging times , stay humble in the continuous pursuit of knowledge , and cherish the village of loved ones that will support you through this journey .”
