NEW MD PROGRAM
CDU ANNOUNCES NEW 4-YEAR MEDICAL DEGREE PROGRAM
CDU made a landmark announcement in October 2022 , unveiling its first independent 4-year medical degree ( MD ) program , the only such program offered by a Historically Black institution west of the Mississippi . This pioneering program , receiving preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education ( LCME ), symbolizes a significant step towards enhancing physician workforce diversity in California and beyond . The University , known for its exceptional diversity and commitment to health equity , received over 1000 applications for only 60 available slots in its charter class .
MATCH DAY 2023
29 GRADUATING MEDICAL STUDENTS MATCHED
Twenty-nine graduating medical students gathered on the CDU campus in South Los Angeles with friends , family , faculty , and supporters to participate in a Match Day event in March 2023 . All 29 CDU students were successfully matched with a residency . CDU ’ s soon-to-be doctors were selected to serve their residencies at top-tier institutions across the country from Massachusetts General Hospital on the east coast to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles .
The University of California ' s programs were well represented as well with 70 % of the graduating seniors remaining in California and 50 % of the students picked to complete their residency in Southern California . Specifically , 55 % of the students matched in Primary Care specialties , and 10 % matched in Family Medicine , which is twice the national average . Some of the most competitive specialties such as Urology were also well represented .
DIVERSITY IN MEDICINE PIPELINE INITIATIVE
TWO CDU STUDENTS CHOSEN FOR CLINICAL ROTATION WITH NFL ’ S MEDICAL STAFF
Two CDU students , Nonye Ikeanyi and Daniel Cordova , were chosen for an exceptional opportunity as part of the National Football League ’ s ( NFL ) Diversity in Medicine Pipeline Initiative . Ikeanyi completed her clinical rotation with the medical staff of the Los Angeles Rams , while Cordova embarked on his journey with the Los Angeles Chargers medical team .

THE PAC12 HEALTH EQUITY SUMMIT
Dr . Lisa Barkley , Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Associate Dean of Diversity , Equity , and Inclusion for CDU , was a speaker at the Pac12 Health Equity Summit which took place late January . The two-day event , titled “ Race , Gender , Identity & Accessibility Matters in Collegiate Athlete Health ,” examined the delivery of athlete healthcare through the lens of diversity , equity , and inclusion .
