2017 CATEGORY 6 Project value greater than $75 Million Proudly sponsored by Komatsu WINNER: : John Holland, KBR, VicRoads, Public Transport Victoria, Metro Trains Melbourne, and Level Crossing Removal Authority – Burke-North-McKinnon- Centre Level Crossing Removal The project involved removing four dangerous and congested level crossings, the demolition of existing stations and construction of four new modern train stations. In a Victorian first, three level crossing removals were undertaken simultaneously on the same train line. The programming, design and construction windows were accelerated with several high intensity construction blitzes, including a 37-day, 24-hour occupation of the North- McKinnon-Centre Road crossing sites. Narrow rail corridors and close proximity to adjacent properties required the use of sheet piling as the permanent retaining wall system, while two crossings featured the installation of permanent concrete “bath-tub” structures in the rail cutting to account for high water tables.
