Pronunciation Teaching, Listening the Rx for Capital Area Workshop

T
he Capital Area Chapter of CATESOL
is sponsoring its annual Fall Workshop
9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, October 12, at
Napa Hall on the California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) campus. The
presenter is the well-known professor/author Marsha Chan. Marsha is professor of
ESL at Mission College in Santa Clara and
owner/publisher/author at Sunburst Media.
She is active in TESOL and CATESOL and
is co-founder of TOP-IG (Teaching of Pronunciation Interest Group) and TELL-IG
(Technology-Enhanced Language Learning). She is well known for her engaging
seminars at regional, state, and international conferences. She is author of such works
as College Oral Communication 1, Phrase
by Phrase Pronunciation in American English, and English for Child Care: Language
Skills for Parents and Providers.
Her workshop, “Concepts and Methods for Teaching Pronunciation and Listening,” will answer the question: What does
a language teacher need to know to teach
pronunciation? The Pronunciation Doctor
explains how an ESL teacher can prepare
to help students speak more clearly. She
enumerates essential concepts of spoken
English, describes basic oral-language features, discusses fundamental instructional
concerns, and demonstrates engaging ac-
tivities. The participants
will practice listening
and pronunciation techniques, tools, exercises,
and games. Participants
will leave with a training framework drawn
on current theory and
practice and hands-on

experience with numerous effective methods for lively and effective oral language learning.
