RULES OF GOLF
Beginning with this edition of the newsletter, we will dedicate this area to bring your attention to a Rule of Golf. This month, we will bring into view Rule 20-2c, When to Redrop. This Rule can be found on page 82 of your Rule Book. There are, essentially, 10 different instances when a player must redrop a ball. We see a number of players redrop a ball when they should not have or were not entitled to. If you are not the owner of a Rule Book, please stop by the golf shop and pick one up at no charge. We want to make sure that your handicaps or “friendly wagers” are established and decided accurately. However, it should also be said that Golf Rules and Handicaps only matter in forms of competition. If you are not planning on posting a score for handicap purposes or playing in a tournament, then “tee it up anywhere and have fun.” Isn’t that why we play?
NORTHEAST GEORGIA SENIOR PGA CLASSIC
Forty of the best Senior Professional and Amateur players in the state came to Hartwell on August 12th & 13th to test their skills against Cateechee. Our very own Jeff Gotham finished as low professional for the two days with scores of 70 & 69. Only one of the senior amateurs finished ahead of Jeff, by just a single stroke. Doug Stiles’ one shot victory was capped off with an eagle 2 on hole #18. Congratulations to Doug and Jeff for their outstanding play. Congratulations to Jonathan Shiflet and John McGuigan for, respectively, being the Club Champion and Low Net Winner in the 2013 Championship. Jonathan fired rounds of 67-64 to win the two day event by 18 shots. John McGuigan continued with his winning efforts for the year by shooting net scores of 71-66 to capture the overall Low Net award. John also won the 2013 Men’s Match Play title in July, as well as being part of the winning team earlier this year at our “Souper Bowl” tournament. Congratulations go to both players for their fine efforts.
MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
MASON BOWERS, SENIOR ASST. SUPERINTENDENT
ON THE GREEN
The hot and humid summer days seem to slowly be making their way behind us and the fall weather is just around the corner. In preparation for the upcoming changes to the weather we will begin some of our fall activities. On Monday, September 23, and Tuesday, September 24th, we will be performing another greens aeration using our half-inch hollow tines. Hollow tines allow us to remove numerous cores from the turf. By removing these cores we are increasing the percentage of air in the soil which is needed by the grass roots. It also allows the release of unwanted gases like carbon dioxide. The increase in air spaces in the soil also helps to relieve compaction which is another problem when trying to grow quality turf. Winter over seeding will begin on Wednesday, September 25th. We will be seeding the tees, fairways, apps, and collars during this time. Due to the seeding we will be irrigating throughout the day until we have established a firm foundation with the rye grass. During this time we will also be “cart path only” for a few weeks and appreciate your understanding and continued support during this time. Much needed sand is still being added to select bunkers and we will continue this over the upcoming months. The tennis courts are in great shape and the fall weather will bring with it optimum tennis conditions. Come try them out, and as always we appreciate and value your feedback. THANK YOU for supporting Cateechee Golf Club!!
