Carmart Donates Two Brand New Peugeot Cars for Sri Lankan Automobile Engineering Students
Carmart Limited, the authorised distributor for both Peugeot and Mazda vehicles in the island, recently donated two brand new Peugeot 508 diesel cars to the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training of Sri Lanka. The donations were done as a part of the company’s contribution to a social welfare project that was initiated during the time of the ex-Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake and the previous Minister of Skills Development and Vocational Training Mahinda Samarasinghe.
The vehicles are expected to be handed over to the Ceylon German Technical Institute in Moratuwa and the Automobile Engineering Training Institute in Wellampitiya, under the supervision of the current Minister of Skills Development and Vocational Training Chandima Weerakkody.
The newly donated cars are expected to be used as technical learning platforms to help train and educate Sri Lankan automobile engineering students about the latest technological developments in the global automotive field. It was also stated during the endowment event that this contribution marks the first time that such high end European made cars were given to these institutes as a private donation.
The donated vehicles were valued at around Rs. 40 Million and were imported to Sri Lanka under a special approval from the government’s Exchange Control to be used exclusively for technical training as test cars within the respective automobile engineering schools and therefore is not allowed for private use.

The Mercedes-Benz Actros is a broad array of heavy vehicles that is consisted of commercial vehicles ranging from small-scale tractors to large-scale transporters. The heavy-duty haulers that were delivered to Melwire Rolling were powerful machines, with a carrying capacity of 33 tons. It is powered using a massive 12L engine that can generate an impressive 313 horsepower while producing a torque of roughly 1530 Nm at a low speed of just 1080 RPM. For its size, the engine has an impressive fuel economy that isn’t offered by any of its competitors.
Diesel and Motor Engineering PLC (DIMO), one of the largest automobile importers in the country, recently made history by delivering a fleet of Mercedes-Benz Actros heavy-duty trucks to Melwire Rolling (Pvt) Ltd, the largest steel manufacturer in Sri Lanka.
The Chairman and Managing Director of DIMO, Ranjith Pandithage, delivered the first three of an order of five trucks to the Director of Melwire Rolling, P. Muruganandhan, at a small delivery event.
All of the vehicles delivered were Mercedes-Benz Actros 6x4 Prime Mover Semi Trailer heavy-duty trucks that are widely used for the transportation of steel.
