Emirates SkyCargo, the biggest intercontinental air cargo operator in the world recently gave its hand to transport the Sri Lankan built DI-MORA P2 racing car to the world’s leading student motorsport competition, the Formula Student 2018, which was recently held at Silverstone, UK.
Designed, improved and assembled by the students at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Moratuwa, the DI-MORA P2, is an excellent example of modern Sri Lankan engineering working at its finest. The car is the second iteration of its predecessor, the DI-MORA P1, which also competed at the Formula Student racing competition back in 2016.
As the brainchild of Moratuwa University’s ‘Team Shark’, the car also received the backing of one of the largest automobile giants of Sri Lanka, Diesel & Motor Engineering PLC, who offered funding, support and guidance to make this machine a reality.
Built to be lighter and faster than the previous version, the D-MORA P2 is constructed using aircraft grade aluminium and carbon fibre, giving it a weight of just 195kg. Powered using a 2-cylinder 650cc Yamaha engine, the car can reach 100 km/h in under just 3.5 seconds.
