The 13th of January 2018 was an eventful day for the local motorsports fraternity as Sri Lanka’s first ever international karting facility, the Sri Lanka Karting Circuit (SLKC) – Bandaragama was declared opened.
Adding to this, the circuit was used to host the X30 Asia Cup, Sri Lanka’s debut international karting competition on the very same day. This initiative by the David Pieris Motor Company was opened by the Hon. Minister of Sport, Dayasiri Jayasekara alongside the Chairman DPMC, Mr. David Peiris himself, who was the spearhead of the SLKC- Bandaragama project.
The first day of the X30 Asia Cup took off with drivers from the four categories – Cadet, Junior, Senior and Master/Veteran getting a feel of the all new international track for practice followed by the qualifying events and heats.
The second and final day of the event was a heavy display of Karting with over 40 drivers from 8 different nationalities competing at the competition for the invaluable opportunity to win a free entry to IAME World Finals that will be held in Le Mans, France in September this year.
The finals saw the following racers crossing the checkered flag first in their respective categories,
Cadet Class - Yevan David (Sri Lanka)
Junior Class - Kalen Chin (Australia)
Master Class - Jason Burns (Australia)
Senior Class - Prassetyo Hardja (Indonasia)
