2017 mazda cx-9 nabs top
safety pick+ award
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) of the United States gave the 2017 model of the Mazda CX-9 SUV its Top Safety Pick+ Rating, after extensive crash tests and crash prevention trials conducted on this vehicle. The new rating is an exceptional achievement for Mazda, and should be noted as a significant improvement from the 2015 model of this mid-size crossover SUV.
The 2017 model, which started its production in November 2016, saw substantial improvements to its front and side protection. Mazda reformed the deployment configuration of the CX-9’s side curtain airbags, which offered a notable security upgrade, to the SUV’s front and rear passengers. As a result, the 2017 Mazda CX-9 was able to attain top scores in all five major crash categories that also included the more difficult to achieve overlap test.
Apart from that, the Mazda CX-9 scored high on front crash prevention, gaining a “Superior” rating in the process. The SUV was able to prevent potential crashes in the automatic braking tests, with speeds ranging from 20 km/h to 40 km/h.
However, the technology that offers the “Superior” front crash prevention is only available on the CX-9’s two highest trim levels, which includes the Grand Touring and the Signature. Nevertheless, the two models also offered the best headlight configuration seen on the CX-9, which managed to score an “Acceptable” rating.
For a vehicle to achieve the IIHS 2017 Top Safety Pick+ award, it must attain at least a “Good” rating in all of the five crash tests, “Good” or “Acceptable” rating for Headlights and an “Advanced” or “Superior” rating for front crash prevention.
