Ms . Dzurenda Inspires Creativity
Article by : Mrs . Burleson – Cougar Connection
In the art room at Crafton Elementary , students are beginning to learn about the art of weaving . Weaving is the perfect winter activity . Winter is a time of reflection and coziness , making it the perfect season to work with fibers and dive into a weaving project . The quiet of winter can be incredibly conducive to focusing on the meditative repetition of weaving . A variety of materials will be utilized - paper , yarn , ribbon , pipe cleaners , and burlap .
I hope you have enjoyed the projects that the students have brought home so far this school year . Portraiture and the art element , line , were the themes of the projects . As always , the students ' artwork and craftsmanship exceeded my expectations . Crafton Elementary is full of so many artistic and creative students ! Aside from the time invested in the art making , it is pointless to create if you do not know the history behind the idea / concept . Students participate in a thorough discussion of the concept in which they view and investigate artwork and artists history . Vocabulary is introduced and revisited throughout the projects to ensure students take something home with them that is far more than just a piece of artwork .
An arts ’ education helps build academic skills and increases academic performance , while also providing alternative opportunities to reward skills of children who learn differently .
4th Grade Math Program Helps Students Excel
Article by : Mrs . Mozzocio – Cougar Connection
Fourth grade students at Carnegie Elementary have begun to use a new program in Math called SuccessMaker . This is a powerful program that will supplement the core Math instruction the students receive in their core Math class with Mrs . Hanley . SuccessMaker is adaptive and will personalize the students ’ learning tiered to the level that they are on . Students only need to work on this program 15 minutes a day in school for the first 2-3 weeks they use it . After those 2-3 weeks , the initial placement will be complete and students will only need to do 15 minutes three times a week to continue to succeed in the program . Mrs . Hanley can use the data gained from the program to see where students are excelling and where students need extra support . She can also use the data to project how the students will perform on the PSSA assessment in April . We are very excited to start this new program !
Gift of Time Photos by : Carnegie Elementary Article by : Mrs . Mozzocio – Cougar Connection
Chief Jeff Kennedy and the Carnegie Police Department graciously offered lunch out with a student for Carnegie PTA ’ s Gift of Time Fundraiser . This particular raffle was the most popular Gift of Time offered . Madison Gasior was the lucky winner ! Madison chose to take fellow classmate , Juliette Dean , and her homeroom teacher , Ms . Lewis , to join her for lunch at Slice on Broadway in Carnegie with Chief Kennedy . Chief Kennedy had Carnegie Officer Rieder meet them at Slice ! Chief Kennedy surprised the girls with Christmas presents , too ! Madison rode back to school with Officer Rieder and got to set off the siren when she arrived !
It was an amazing experience for all involved . Chief Kennedy has already offered the same Gift of Time for next year !
