Fire School ( Minimum Standards )

The Firefighter Minimum Standards Program includes both Firefighter I and Firefighter II courses and is designed to provide the necessary theory , knowledge and skills needed to become a certified Firefighter .
The program is usually 16 weeks long , but it can be up to 24 weeks long . You can go to school during the day or at night . In the minimum standards course , students learn :
• Building construction facts
• How to tie essential knots
• How to rappel on a rope from a window
• How to put up a ladder
• How to climb a ladder
• How to rescue someone from a building
• How to extinguish a fire
This course is very physical and requires students to pass a physical abilities test ( CPAT ) to get in .

Candidate Physical Ability Test ( CPAT )

The CPAT test is a nationally used test to ensure all incoming fire school students are able to perform the job .
The CPAT is a pass / fail , timed test that consists of eight separate events ( stair climb , hose drag , equipment carry , ladder raise and extension , forcible entry , search , rescue , and ceiling breach and pull ).
