How to Become a Firefighter
• Be at least 18 years old
• Have a high school diploma or its equivalent
• Have good moral character
• Possess a valid Florida driver ’ s license
• Possess a current CPR card
• Attend EMT school
• Pass a physical ability test
• Attend fire school
Do you have what it takes to be a firefighter ?
Being a Firefighter can be a life-long career that allows you to protect and serve your community . Firefighters respond to fires and other emergency situations , including emergency medical calls , to protect property and to save lives .
Every day the job is different , and every calls is unique . Most calls are emergency medical calls , hence the need for EMS training . The fire calls can be anything including :
• a car accident with entrapment
• a water rescue
• a ruptured gas line
• a chemical spill
• a house fire
The Culture
Station life is much like family life . Firefighters work a 24-hour on and 48-hour off schedule , which lets them spend so much time with their family . When working 24-hour shifts , firefighters eat together , train together , workout together and sleep at the fire station when not running calls leading to their coworkers becoming family .
Passion of Firefighters
To be a firefighter , you have to have passion to help people .
• Is it dangerous ? It can be , but departments go to great lengths to train to do things properly and safely .
• Is it exciting ? Every day brings different challenges , which can be very exciting .
• Is it rewarding ? Absolutely , you get to help people in their greatest time of need and make a positive difference in their lives .
Emergency Medical Technician ( EMT ) Certification
Firefighters must also be certified as Emergency Medical Technicians ( EMTs ).
EMT school is one semester long or 16 weeks . Students can go to school during the day or at night . In EMT school , you will spend time in classroom instruction learning essential skills through hands-on training labs , riding on an ambulance and working in an emergency room to gain clinical experience .
