Michael Sam & The 2014 Draft
In January 2014, Missouri football player Michael Sam was projected by the NCAA to be drafted in the first round, accourding to their Mock Draft. At this time, Michael Sam was in the closet about his sexual identity. Michael Sam made history on February 9, 2014 when he accounced to the world that he was gay. Sam explained that he planned to come out after the NFL draft, but felt the world needed to know the real him before hewas selected to play at the next level. In the next mock draft released by the NCAA, Sam came in as a late fifth rounder, dropping almost 200 picks. In the draft in May, Michael Sam was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the draft. He was selected as pick number 249 out of 256 drafted players, barely making the cut.
