When a nuclear explosion occurs, a serious fallout occurs when thousands of particles go up into the mushroom cloud and then falls to the ground 20 to 100 miles away.. A few hours after the explosion if it starts to look like it is snowing, it is the fallout. Even though you cannot hear, smell, taste, or see fallout you will be able to see the dust that the explosion pushed away from the blast that may have radiation in it.

Step 3 Try to cover up the room that you will be in with furniture to make the walls thicker and will be harder for the radiation to get inside of the room. (A room in the center of the basement or the lowest part of the building could work.)

Step 4 Make sure you have a radio in the room with clean food and water. You may have to stay in the room from 24 hours to one week to protect yourself from the radiation and from the fallout until you can go outside.

Step 5 Wait until the authorities say on the radio station that is safe to go out. Even though they say it is safe to go outside, you should still be aware that some places have more radiation than others.

In the 1950s and early 1960s during The Cold War, two radio stations established by Harry S. Truman, named ConelraD for when nuclear bombs exploded in the United States. Letters C and the D stands for The Civil Defense system and the channels were 640 or 1240 kHz or am on the radio dial. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) later replaced it in 1963.
