The graph below shows what how much the United states supposedly spend. “According to surveys, Americans on average think the US spends as much as 26 percent of the federal budget on foreign aid – more than on Social Security or Medicare – which is much different than the 0.8 percent reality” (Jennifer Lentfer). So with this being said, it seems like people think that we overspend. Someone that thinks that foreign aid hurts more than helps is Angus Deaton, a British man born in October of 1945 and a graduate from Cambridge University. What he believes is that when trying to help the poor in developing countries, the rich maybe corrupting the nation’s governments, which causes for their growth to slow down. So all of this shows that some people disagree with foreign aid being helpful. Therefore, with all these different opinions from people that United States foreign aid is helpful and other opinions that it is not, it makes it unclear if it is helpful or not. More research needs to be done on this topic in order find out if foreign aid really helps.
