NOT COMPLAINING OR CREATING CONFLICT There ' s nothing worse than when a coach hears constant complaining . At times it ' s important to give feedback like saying you ' re more tired than usual , perhaps letting the coach know your hunger levels by saying you ' re starving , etc . But when an athlete is constantly complaining about being tired , hungry , or about how much they want this journey to be over , it shows the coach that the athlete is weak-minded . The coach ' s job is not to make you feel comfortable and be a therapist , the coach ' s job is to make you look your absolute best for a specific show while doing everything possible to keep you mentally stable and your physical health in check . If you have a good coach , that means he ' s done this journey before so he knows exactly how challenging it can be . There ' s no need to let them know 40 times a day about how much you hate this journey .
RECOGNIZING YOU REPRESENT THAT COACHES BRAND How you carry yourself is the name you ' re giving your coach . If you go to bodybuilding shows and are constantly talking about the coach ' s protocols , being belligerent , and putting others down , people will directly affiliate the coach with you . Same thing happens when you step on stage . If you have done a half effort job and have lackluster results to display on stage , your inability to follow the plan now speaks negatively of your coach ' s ability to develop a great athlete , even though it may not be their fault at all .
know that this doesn ' t make you better than somebody else at being a human being . It just means you are better than most at what you ' ve dedicated a lot of time and effort to . A great physique should be something that inspires others and that represents your good character , not give the realm of fitness and other bodybuilder ’ s a bad name .
Unfortunately , as a coach and personal trainer for over a decade now , I have seen that a larger portion of individuals in this realm are missing many of the attributes above . When an athlete hits these attributes bang on , it doesn ’ t even matter what kind of genetics they have , they can get very far .
Being a coachable athlete is one of the greatest attributes you can have in order to maximize your results and be able to improve your physique . If you feel like you lack these attributes above , you can either work on them , or perhaps you can decide that you ' re not coachable . Which is totally fine and there is nothing wrong with that .
If you find this is you , maybe you are somebody better off coaching themselves . Perhaps you like being in control and like the troubleshooting aspect of this sport . But don ' t waste a coach ' s time and disrespect them by lacking the attributes above and then blaming them for a shortcoming .
