THE TYPE OF SWEETENER Most protein powders are made to taste like desserts, and this taste is not an accident. Looking at the ingredients and seeing where the sweetness comes from can be crucial to determine if it is the right product for you. If you are on a very low carb or ketogenic diet and your protein powder is sweetened with sugar this can be detrimental to your goals. Most protein powders now are sweetened with sucralose which is an artificial sweetener that many people do not mind but can upset some individual’s stomachs. There is also stevia which is a natural plant based sweetener that may not provide as much of a sweet taste, but still flavors your protein well. There can be so many products on the shelf that it becomes a bit overwhelming to pick one with all the fancy labels out there. The nutrition facts label and the ingredients will be the best place to get information about your protein powder. Make sure to do your research, and become an educated consumer before you spend your money on a shiny label. The most common protein at the end of the day is whey. Whey protein has been what has been around for decades and it is very bioavailable in your body as long as you do not have an allergy to whey. Whey can range from hydrolyzed protein which has enzymes in there to allow it to be predigested, thus very light on your digestion, all the way to casein protein which can be very slow acting and higher in lactose. Most of the time, you will be safe buying an isolate as it is very useful for most individuals goals.
