SPILLING OVER Another mistake I see many athletes make is trying to come in too full. I hear the athlete backstage complain that they need to fill out more so they keep ramming down loads of food to “fill out.” By the time they get on stage, the only thing they ended of filling out was a bloated belly and depending on when they started their “loading”, they eventually display a layer of water under the skin which usually indicates that they “spilled over”.  What separates a bodybuilder from any other type of athlete is the level conditioning a bodybuilder can achieve. To quote a high level judge I know, “I’d take a shredded 17” arm over an out of shape 19” arm any day, because on stage it is the conditioned arm that will win every time… that is bodybuilding.” Yet, I still see this mistake being made at all levels, even with female competitors. It doesn’t take a lot of carbs to fill out a 105 lbs female athlete.  I understand that everyone wants to come in looking round and full, but to be blunt - if you don’t have the muscle to fill out, no amount of carbs forced down your throat will make you Big Ramy. What separates a bodybuilder from any other type of athlete is the level conditioning a bodybuilder can achieve.
