CANADIAN PHYSIQUE ALLIANCE FALL ISSUE SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER | Page 114

Juan: What is the big est misconception you feel women have about weight training and what are 3 things that most people are overlooking when in the gym looking to transform their physique? I have to stay on track... so having my trainer Jeni Brisco has been a lifesaver. Leaning on your coach and family when you are struggling is key!  The determination it takes to stick to the training schedule and the diet plan is too much some days but you must persevere. Juan: What is some advice you would give competitors or even individuals who are afraid to compete because they feel it is impossible with kids? Charlene: I always feel if you want something bad enough you will go for it. Children just make you have to prioritize your time. I find you give up certain things (lunch dates, friends, outings) in order to fit your training in. It’s just a choice. My advice to others who want to compete but may be afraid to because they don't know how to juggle the demands of the journey and of children is to 'make a decision to do it and then do it'.  Once you have made the decision, build a team around you who will support you and help you stay accountable for your choice.  I recommend signing on with a trainer and building up some babysitting 'credits'! Charlene: It seems many women feel the gym is going to make them big and bulky. This is not true.  Females don't have the needed testosterone to bulk up without years and years and years of hard and heavy lifting. You can change your physique for the better by spending consistent time in the gym lifting and doing cardio.  It feels so good to be fit and it greatly reduces your chance of injuries and extends your ability to be active long into old age. People very much overlook the importance of consistency, routine, and hard work.  Many folks want results overnight and when that doesn't happen they give up.  Stick with it because it takes time but it is so very worth it!  I am a strong believer in traditional exercises and these are often skipped in lieu of the new fancy trends.  Simply put:  do squats well, be diligent about excellent form and focus on the muscle you are working.  This will produce results that are worthy of praise.
