CANADIAN PHYSIQUE ALLIANCE FALL ISSUE SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER | Page 113
Physique was a newer class, so I decided to give it
a shot. The preparation was tough, getting as lean
as possible, plus working on a routine. I’m not the
most graceful person; so this was my biggest
challenge.
Juan: How supportive has your family been in
your competition journey?
Charlene: My family has been amazing! I get a lot of
support and encouragement. My husband is so used to
the craziness and expense that accompanies
competing. I love how he stands beside me through it
all. He is my rock. My boys have grown into young
adults making their way in this world. All four of
them have been taught to workout properly. Having a
Mom as a personal trainer isn’t always easy and a mom
in a bathing suit and high heel shoes can even be
worse.
My siblings, parents, and in-laws have been wonderful
as well. They do all they can to attend my
competitions. Early on my sister did my hair and
makeup and my brother and sister in-law travelled to
Alberta from BC to cheer me on in May.
My in-laws have supported me well
over the years by watching my boys
when they were little so that I
could train. My brother in-law is a
high-level athlete as well, having
earned his Pro Card in
bodybuilding four years ago. He
has been a big encouragement
because he 'gets' the journey. I am
grateful for them all. It truly takes
a team to do this competition thing
well.
Juan: Where does your
motivation come from in
moments when you may feel
like you are exhausted due to
prep?
Charlene: Achieving the desired
results requires dedication and
determination that goes beyond
one’s own ability to reason. It has
to be non-negotiable. Just
something you do without
question. So much time, money,
and mental energy goes into this!
