MIKE 2017 Canadian Folk Music Awards Nominees Unveiled BRUCE COCKBURN & OTHERS AT THE 2016 CFMA GALA The 75 nominees have been announced for the 13 th annual Canadian Folk Music Awards, taking place Nov. 18-19 in Ottawa. For the first time ever, the weekend’s events will take shape as two eve- nings, which are open to the public. The new format will combine the Canadian Folk Music Awards’ live music showcases and the awards gala. Among the multi-award nominees are Stephen Fearing, Amelia Curran, and Twin Flames. Klô Pelgag Takes Home Three Felix Awards KLÔ PELGAG AT ADISQ’S PREMIER GALA ADISQ’s first industry gala was held on Oct. 26, 2017, in Montréal, with the main broadcast awards gala held three days later. Among the winners was Klô Pelgag, who took home the Félix Award for Alternative Album of the Year and the Critics’ Choice Album of the Year for L’Étoile thoracique, as well as Songwriter of the Year. Two Félix trophies were awarded posthumously to Leonard Co- hen for his final album, You Want It Darker, for Anglophone Album of the Year and for the Québec artist who achieved the most success outside Québec. An honorary Félix trophy was also given to Cohen as a tribute to his whole career, with his son Adam Cohen on hand to accept it. CO M SOCAN Honours Quebec Industry at Montreal Gala SOCAN honoured Québec’s music industry on Oct. 17 th at its 28 th Montréal Awards Gala, with nearly 50 awards presented. For the first time in the gala’s history, two special achievement awards were presented to one person, Robert Charlebois, who received the SOCAN Lifetime Achievement Award for his accomplished career, as well as the SOCAN Cultural Impact Award, alongside his collaborator Claude Péloquin, for their song “Lindberg.” Luc Plamondon presented the SOCAN Special Achievement Award to Monique Leyrac, while Plamondon also broke his own record for SOCAN Classics (exceeding 25,000 radio spins in Québec), winning his 35 th and 36 th awards for “La Légende de Jimmy” and “La fille aux bas nylon.” John Nathaniel received the prestigious SOCAN Songwriter of the Year Award, and his song “Éclat,” co-written with Alexe Gaudreault and Mariane Cossette-Bacon, also won a Popular Music Award.
