CHANGES Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd & bülow Lead 2019 JUNO Award Nominations ALESSIA CARA WINNING A 2017 JUNO AWARD. The nominees for the 48 th Annual JUNO Awards have been announced by CARAS. JUNO Week 2019, hosted in London, ON, will culminate with broadcasted awards and performances on Sunday, March 17, available across all CBC platforms. Shawn Mendes leads this year with a total of six nominations including: JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and Pop Album of the Year. The Weeknd received five nominations for JUNO Fan Choice and Single, Album, Artist, and R&B/Soul Record- ing of the Year. First-time nominees recognized with four nominations each include bülow and London’s own Loud Luxury. Artists with three nominations include Alessia Cara, Ba- hamas, Hubert Lenoir, KILLY, Michael Bublé, Three Days Grace, and Tory Lanez. Robbie Robertson to be Honoured at Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Awards Canadian Music Week (CMW) has announced that Robbie Robert- son will be the recipient of the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award in the Canadian Music Industry Hall of ROBBIE ROBERTSON Fame at the an- nual Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards in Toronto on May 9, 2019. 16 CANADIAN MUSICIAN Robertson was born in Toronto with roots in both the Mohawk community at the Six Nations Reserve and the Jewish enclave of the city’s downtown. A guitar player from age 10, he received his rock ‘n’ roll education as a member of the Hawks, the backing band for rockabilly star Ronnie Hawkins. The Hawks went on to play with Bob Dylan on his legendary “going electric” tours in 1965 and 1966. Moving to Wood- stock in 1967, Robertson and his bandmates recorded the seminal “basement tapes” with Dylan before changing their name to The Band and cutting the ground-breaking Music from Big Pink in 1968. Over the course of seven studio albums, Robertson penned such classics as “The Weight,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “Up on Cripple Creek,” “Acadian Driftwood,” and “It Makes No Difference.” For more information, go to www.cmw.net. YOU COULD PLAY HERE... BreakOut West Artist Submissions Now Open THE AWARDS GOES TO... THE WILD! AT BREAKOUT WEST 2018 Showcase submissions are now being accepted for the 2019 BreakOut West Fes- tival, which is taking place from Oct. 2-6 in Whitehorse, YT. Submissions close on March 20, 2019. All showcase artists must be residents of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, the Yukon, and/or the Northwest Territories, for at least six months between Jan. 1, 2018 and March 20, 2019. In the case of groups, 50 per cent of the members must meet the residency requirement. BreakOut West gives artists the oppor- tunity to showcase in front of over 3,000 music fans and more than 500 national and international music industry professionals, including music supervisors, managers, festival buyers, agents, publicists, social marketing experts, and more. Showcase Applications Open for Canadian Performing Arts Booking Conferences Artist showcase applications are currently open for performing arts booking and professional development conferences across the country. These events provide an opportunity for performing artists of all kinds, including musicians, to showcase for arts organizations and other parties seeking to book acts to tour to their communities in 2020/21. These events include: Manitoba Show- case 2019, which is happening Oct. 24-27 in Winkler, MB, with an application deadline of April 30 th ; Contact East 2019, happening from Sept. 26-29 in Charlottetown, PE, with an application deadline of March 31 st ; Alberta Showcase, happening Oct. 17-20 in Fort Sas- katchewan, AB, with an application deadline of April 1 st ; OSAC Showcase, happening Oct. 18-29 in Saskatoon, SK, with an application deadline of May 7 th ; and the CAPACOA Con- ference, happening Nov. 13-17 in Ottawa, with an application deadline of April 29 th . Submissions Open for Indie Week Canada 2019 Indie Week Canada is accepting artist showcase applications for its 2019 edition, which takes place in Toronto from Nov. 13- 17. Applications are submitted via Sonicbids and the early-bird submission fee of $25 is available until April 9, after which the fee increases to $35. Indie Week Canada is one of the top emerging artist festivals, hosting more than 300 artists at 25-plus venues in six days. Along with artist showcases, Indie Week hosts the Indie101 Music + Tech Conference with industry leaders and over 80 speakers. Artists have the opportunity to participate in mentorship, classroom, and one-on-one ses- sions along with the regular industry panels. Indie Week is open to all genres except comedy and cover acts.
