The population of California is approximately 39 million and the population of Canada is approximately 35 million. At face value, why would companies in California be profitable and why would that not transfer over to Canada and especially given that the price of cannabis is higher in Canada than in California? That critique by Edward Jones was more directed at the medical market which, at least to myself, seems even more puzzling at face value. Further, the population of Colorado is under 6-million. Ontario’s population alone is over 14-million.
Lack of regulatory approval and control. That will come in time and all expect a DIN or equivalent designation in due course. To date, a major critique by some has been the over regulation and control.
The other critique was their assertion that there are low barriers to entry. Presumably this is rooted in the fact that residents may grow up to four plants at a time. People are also free to make their own wine and beer yet the overwhelming majority choose not to. To get an ideal and consistent level of THC and/or CBD is difficult in controlled environments under constant care let alone in one’s backyard or basement. It will be all but impossible for the typical recreational casual grower to achieve this consistently plus plants are susceptible to insects and other pests as per this source. Canadian spring and fall can be too cold and harsh at times with frost often well into May and the summer months are often plagued with either high or low volumes of precipitation and of course heat and humidity. Further complicating matters is ensuring the ideal nutrient mix while fending off the aforementioned insects and any other critter that may enjoy devouring the foliage. Most people choose to buy their fruits and vegetables rather than grow their own produce.
