Tyson Cave Gets Crack at WBU Crown Against Rios
Halifax Contender Meets Jesus Rios as Headliner of 11/28 Show in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
It's been almost twelve months since Tyson Cave (27-3-0, 10KOs) was blatantly robbed of the interim WBA championship of the world against Oscar Escandon in California. It was, quite frankly, one of the worst decisions rendered in 2014. Teddy Atlas couldn't believe his eyes. Canadian fight fans were disgusted. But now it seems a modicum of justice will be delivered. On November 28 at the Sportsplex in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Cave will fight for the WBU version of the super bantamweight championship of the world against Jesus Rios (31-8-1, 25KOs) of Mexico.
Cave has bounced back nicely from last year's unjust setback, going 3-0-0. He started his march back to the title with a eight round unanimous decision win over Abraham Gomez (22-10-1, 11KOs) in Montreal, before stopping 50+ fight veteran Jovanny Soto (39-20-1, 34KOs) in under three rounds in Moncton. Finally, in July, Cave stopped Antonio Olguin (9-5-1, 4KOs) in the fifth at the Lions Rink in Spryfield, Nova Scotia.
Jesus Rios has seen plenty of championship action over his 40 fight career, but has yet to go the full twelve rounds. In 2004-2005, Rios won, and successfully defended, the WBA Fedecentro bantamweight title in a trio of early stoppage wins. Most recently, Rios came out on the losing end of his IBF Inter-Continental title clash with undefeated Albert Pagara (25-0-0, 8KOs), losing via TKO1. The title, however, was not on the line for Rios, who came into the contest over the super bantamweight limit.
Hopefully, the WBU title will bring Cave one step closer to another fight for the WBA, IBF, WBO, or WBC titles.
