Swinburne re-signs VC Kristjanson

University leader gets five-year extension, targets participation in‘ digital disruption’.

Swinburne University of Technology has reappointed professor Linda Kristjanson vice-chancellor for five years, chancellor Graham Goldsmith announced.

Kristjanson said she was delighted to lead Swinburne University for the next phase of its trajectory.
“ I’ m confident that we have positioned ourselves well over the past few years to respond to the changes and opportunities ahead,” she said.
Kristjanson said she would continue to focus on meeting the changing needs of students and strengthening the university’ s online educational offerings.
“ One of the things I think all of the universities are going to be asked to consider is the way we participate in the digital disruption affecting all of higher education, and [ how to ] embrace online learning in a sensible way that might help us reach more students,” she said.
Kristjanson said a key focus for her during the next five years of her term would be continuing to build on the university’ s research program to ensure the work produced was not only high quality but relevant to community needs.
“ We see ourselves as a university here to serve our community – whether that is our students, industry or the not-for- profit sector,” she said.“ If we can take our research know-how and help turn that into innovation and new industries and contribute to the advanced manufacturing objectives for Victoria, then we will have a very strong and significant role to play.”
Goldsmith said that under Kristjanson’ s leadership, the university had made key decisions“ that have been required to ensure Swinburne continues on its trajectory of growth and achievement”.
“ These are testing times for Australian universities,” he said.“ Students are increasingly expecting more and they are entitled to have high expectations of the university they choose. The nature of academic work is also changing, as rapid advances in technology challenge traditional models of educational delivery.“ We are fortunate to have a leader who understands deeply the transformative power of education and who has been prepared to lead the changes that are required to ensure Swinburne meets the needs of our students – past, present and future.” n
