DEPARTMENT OF CHINESE AND BILINGUAL STUDIES
One of the missions of the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is to promote and develop studies of Chinese in multilingual contexts and studies of multilingualism in Chinese contexts. It has established a relatively strong reputation in Applied Chinese Language Studies, and seeks to extend its strength in areas like Bilingualism( including Translation & Interpreting), Cross-Cultural Communication and East Asian Studies. Another mission of the Department is to offer profession-based programmes that meet the career aspirations of the young adults of Hong Kong and Greater China. It offers bachelor, master, and doctoral programmes in Bilingual Corporate Communication, Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Teaching, Speech Therapy, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign / Second Language, Translating & Interpreting. It also offers programmes in Korean / Japanese Business Communication at bachelor and master levels. Within the Department, there is a Centre for Translation Studies, a Language Testing Unit, and a Chinese Language Centre which provides training in Chinese language and Putonghua for the whole university. ( 1) Professor / Associate Professor in Applied Chinese Linguistics / Chinese Literature / Bilingualism and Communication / Chinese Linguistics / Foreign or Second Language Education / Translation and Interpreting( four posts)
( 2) Assistant Professor / Research Assistant Professor in Applied Chinese Linguistics / Chinese Literature / Chinese Linguistics( two posts)
The appointees will be required to( a) engage in teaching and related learning activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;( b) take an important role in curriculum design and development;( c) undertake scholarly research in his / her area of expertise; and( d) provide administrative support for academic and departmental affairs, and play an active role in programme management. Successful candidates are expected to undertake academic research in his / her area of expertise. Applicants at Professor level will be expected to provide academic leadership in his / her area of expertise.
For post( 1), applicants should have( a) a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, preferably with the specialism in Cantonese Linguistics, Chinese Syntax, Applied Psycholingusitics, Applied Sociolinguistics, Bilingual Corporate Communication, Cross-cultural Communication, First / Second Language Acquisition, First / Second Language Education Pedagogy, Legal Translation, Media Translation, or Interpreting;( b) at least ten years’ relevant post-qualification experience and an excellent record of relevant academic and / or professional achievements;( c) fluency in English; and( d) a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarly activities and professional service. Preference will be given to those who have fluency in Chinese( both written and spoken).
For post( 2), applicants should have( a) a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, preferably with the specialism in Speech Pathology, Speech Therapy, Cantonese Linguistics, Teaching Discipline-specific Chinese( e. g. Corporate Chinese, Legal Chinese, STEM Chinese), or Classical Novel / Drama / Poetry( for international students);( b) a good record of relevant academic and / or professional achievements;( c) the relevant research experience( as supported by evidence of research projects and outputs). ( 3) Associate Professor / Assistant Professor in Chinese Language Education( with concurrent appointment as Director of Chinese Language Centre of the Department)
Reporting to the Head of Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies, the appointee will be offered a concurrent appointment as Director of the Chinese Language Centre.
The appointee will be required to( a) oversee and manage all businesses of the Centre including the delivery of subjects that it offers;( b) represent the Centre to liaise with the Centre’ s stakeholders for the planning and delivery of Chinese language subjects;( c) take a leading role in the Centre’ s curricular-design and pedagogy functions, especially the development of new subjects in the area of Discipline-specific Chinese;( d) engage in teaching and related learning activities;( e) undertake research relevant to the mandate of the Centre; and( f) help enhance the international visibility and network of the Centre and the Department.
Applicants should have( a) a PhD degree in a relevant discipline;( b) relevant experience in academic administration at tertiary level, preferably with experience in or knowledge of curricular design and development;( c) an excellent command of Chinese and English;( d) a track record of research capability, including research-grant application; and( e) a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research and professional service.
( 4) Teaching Fellow in Bilingualism and Communication / Translation and Interpreting( three posts)
The appointees will be required to( a) engage in teaching and related learning activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;( b) engage in scholarly activities in his / her area of expertise; and( c) undertake administrative duties in academic and departmental affairs.
Applicants should have( a) a master’ s degree or above in a relevant discipline, preferably with the specialism in Cross-cultural Communication, Language Studies, Literary Studies, Translation Studies or related fields;( b) at least three years’ relevant post-qualification teaching or working experience;( c) effective classroom teaching skills; and( d) a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and professional service. For the post in Bilingualism & Communication, preference will be given to those with working experience in corporate and / or media communication.
( 5) Clinical Associate in Speech Therapy
The appointee will be required to( a) provide speech therapy service to clients attending treatment and / or assessment programmes organized by the Department’ s Speech Therapy Unit;( b) provide consultancy service;( c) assist in conducting research activities related to his / her clinical specialty;( d) carry out administrative duties;( e) teach and supervise speech therapy students in their clinical settings;( f) perform other teaching support functions; and( g) conduct talks and training for professionals working in the fields of speech-language and communication disorders, and for clients and their caretakers.
Applicants should have( a) a bachelor’ s degree in Speech Language Therapy or an equivalent qualification, and be eligible for becoming a full member of the Hong Kong Association of Speech Therapists;( b) at least six years’ post-qualification speech therapy clinical or clinical teaching experience, preferably with expertise in specific area( s) of Speech Therapy and / or a higher degree in a relevant area;( c) a good command of both written and spoken English and Chinese, preferably with proficiency in Putonghua on top of Cantonese; and( d) good interpersonal and communication skills.
Remuneration and Conditions of Service A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application. For Assistant Professor in post( 2) and post( 3), and for posts( 4) and( 5), initial appointments will be made on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. For post( 2), appointments for Research Assistant Professor( with remuneration package same as that for an Assistant Professor) will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract for up to three years. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. For posts( 1) and( 3), an appropriate term will be provided for appointments at Associate Professor and Professor levels.
