HOW TO PREPARE FOR OFFICE
If you’re reading this, you’re probably thinking of running for President –– obviously, the best position on the board. Take the next few months to prepare yourself for a campaign: what are some central goals you have for NJCL? The best candidates are always thoughtful and concrete –– they generally have at least three platform points and experience to back those up. Successful candidates also take the time to have good discussions with JCLers of all different backgrounds and experiences: remember, as a President, you’re serving everyone!
As President, I coordinate with my officers frequently about their work. I plan agendas for meetings, then lead the committee and board in discussion. Finally, I work year-round on planning the National Convention. While these duties are crucial to the success of the board (and JCL at large), I still believe the office of the President is mostly abstract. As President, you have the power to push a meaningful agenda forward and pursue your vision for the NJCL.
As you prepare yourself to potentially become America’s Next Top President, make sure you do your due diligence in figuring out how you want to lead NJCL forward. Practice your leadership skills at meetings, and familiarize yourself with Robert’s Rules of Order. Develop your good communication skills by promptly responding to email and staying in close contact with your officers. Finally, don’t be a sitting duck –– do something! JCL is ever-changing, and novelty is welcomed with open arms. Create, improve, and expand on all that you can.
