ARTICLE V

OFFICERS

STRAIGHT FROM THE

Section 2. Eligibility. Nominees and candidates for office shall meet the following qualifications and, if elected or appointed, maintain these qualifications throughout their term of office:

A. shall have the permission of their custodial parent or legal guardian, local sponsor, and State Chair(s), as well as any other requirements defined by their State.

B. shall be from a State JCL that did not hold the position in the previous year.

C. shall have attended at least one previous NJCL convention.

D. shall attend middle or high school (or equivalent) for the duration of the term

E. shall be enrolled in a classical/ancient studies, Greek, or Latin class at least half of the year during which the student’s office is held, or have completed all classical/ancient studies, Greek, or Latin classes offered at the student’s school.

F. shall be the only candidate for any office from that student’s State (the student belongs to the State of their local chapter, regardless of residence).

G. shall be a member of a chapter and a State in good standing.

Section 3. Nomination Procedure.

A. Prospective candidates shall file to be considered by the Nominations Committee by filling out the designated nomination forms on or before June 15th.

1. The Parliamentarian shall, by June 20th, inform all candidates of the number of persons running for each office. Candidates shall have until June 30th to switch their candidacy to a different office or to remove their name from consideration.

2. If a candidate wishes to run for a different office than the one for which they originally applied, their original documentation shall suffice. They shall, however, be required to obtain permission for this change from their State Chair(s) and communicate that along with their intention to the Parliamentarian.

3. After June 30th, the Parliamentarian shall communicate to the membership about any offices for which there will be a State of Emergency at that year’s convention.

B. A Nominations Committee shall consist of two (2) previously selected representatives from each State JCL attending the NJCL convention, or one if there is only one member of a State present. The NJCL Parliamentarian shall serve as the chair; in the event that the Parliamentarian is a candidate for an office, the NJCL President shall chair during that nomination. The Communications Coordinator shall attend to take minutes. The Constitutional Advisor shall attend the meeting of the Nominations Committee to act as an advisor. The quorum shall be three-fourths of the State JCL chapters present at the NJCL convention.

1. A sponsor from the candidate’s state or province must be present with the candidate at the Nominations Committee, but if no sponsor from the candidate’s state or province is able to attend the meeting, a sponsor from another state or province may stand up for the candidate, with the acquiescence of the candidate’s own local sponsor.

2. If there are two or more nominees for an office, nominations from the floor shall not be allowed. If there are more than two candidates, the Nominations Committee shall elect by ballot two nominees to be candidates for national office.

3. If there are fewer than two nominees for an office, the Parliamentarian may call a State of Emergency. In the case of a State of Emergency, nominations from the floor may be allowed and the National Committee may elect by ballot two nominees to be candidates for
