TIPS & TRICKS

NJCL Campaign Corner | Issue XV 8

on how to approcah speeches and a campaign in general

Stand on a strong platform: Be specific about the ideas you want to pursue. People will question you on your plan.

Don't forget that sidewalk chalk: Don't forget any of your campaign materials for that matter.

Don't give the same speech twice: For the talk you will give at NomCom, detail your qualifications and ideas. In contrast, use the speech that you give at GA to reveal your personality and major platforms.

Tips for Campaign:

(again) Be yourself: The speech reflects you on all levels. If you aren't the funny type, then don't try to be overly-humorous.

Let the voters know about your platform, or your goals and ideas. Be specific about them.

Discuss some of your qualifications and background, but relate them to the position you are seeking.

Practice, or even memorize your speech so you are confidently familiar with it.

You don't have to find someone from another state to introduce you. Have a trusted friend speak about your experiences and capabilities, so you can focus on your ideas for your speech.

"Salvete Omnes" is a nice, standard way to begin your speech, but consider spicing it up with something else!

Take a deep breath and slow down. Most people have a habit of talking quickly when nervous.

Don't stress yourself out and have fun. If you make a mistake, carry on!

Tips for Speeches:

Campaign personally: The best way to win over delegates is to spend time talking to them personally and discussing your goals and their ideas.

A smile is worth a thousand words: A candidate who is having fun will share their charisma with the people around them

Be yourself: Put any inhibitions behind. It serves no good to be reserved in an election. JCLers are very receptive and friendly.

You are your delegation: Make sure the people helping you campaign represent you appropriately.

Be on time: Make sure you are on time to all campaigning events.

There are never stupid questions: Take time to consider everyone's thoughts and quetsions, no matter how trivial they may seem.

REMINDER

Nominations Committee speeches are two minutes.

Speeches at General Assembly are limited to three minutes including any introduction given by another person.

Keep all speeches classy.
