descriptions

the

duties &

responsibilities

of each officer

position

Each year, the NJCL officers attend a Fall Planning Meeting, the Spring Planning Meeting, and the national convention (see this year's schedule on the right for more information). In addition to these meetings, officers hold online Google Hangout meetings. Communication, leadership, and time commitment are essential traits for all NJCL Officers. However, each of the seven different positions requires something a bit different. The official job description can be found in the NJCL Constitution and NJCL Chapter Handbook, but here is a quick rundown of some basic duties:

President

The figurehead of the organization, the president serves as chair of the NJCL Board, promotes the activities of the NJCL within the organization, and plans the NJCL Convention along with the NJCL Convention Advisor and the host state's convention chairs.

First Vice President

The First Vice President assists the NJCL President and other officers, creates and promotes better methods of communication throughout all levels of JCL, arranges for publicity for all national events through national media, arranges for publicity of convention events through local media, and is in charge of JCL membership.

Second Vice President

Give me a J! Give me a C! Give me a L! Spirit and service are the key elements of the Second Vice President. This officer serves as spirit coordinator through individual clubs and at convention, leads the spirit contests, and is the key officer involved with National Latin Week. Furthermore, the 2nd VP comes up with a service project for each month, and leads the discussion for spirit and dance themes at convention.

\Parliamentarian

The upholder of the law, the parliamentarian keeps the executive board aligned with Robert's Rules of Order at meetings, is in charge of revising the Constitution, Bylaws, and Chapter Handbook. The parliamentarian is also in charge of recruiting candidates to run for office and elections.

Communications Coordinator

The communications coordinator (a.k.a. the "CoCo") keeps accurate minutes of executive board meetings during the Fall and Spring Planning Meeting and at the General Assemblies at convention, Nominating Committee meeting, and the Constitutional Amendments Committee meeting. Furthermore, the CoCo compiles and maintains the contact information for the present state officers. The communications coordinator also helps update the website with any forms. If technology and an accuracy to detail are your forte, the CoCo position may be right for you.

Historian

Compiling the National JCL Scrapbook every year, the historian corresponds with state officer to get current information on each state's JCL and is in charge of the promotional photo contest and scrapbook contest. Creativity and photo skills are helpful.

Torch Editor

The editor is responsible for the publication of the Torch:U.S., collecting and compiling all the information that goes into it. The editor makes sure the information is pertinent to the NJCL and the way the NJCL Convention is presented, information may include updates from states, interviews with past and present NJCL officers, or other announcements by the American Classical League.

Held in October at the university holding the next convention, the Fall Planning Meeting allows for the exchange of ideas, and sets up the convention schedule after touring the campus. Next year, the FPM will held on Oct. 19-Oct. 22 at Troy University in Alabama.

Held around February or March, the Spring Planning Meeting is used to clarify any workshop information, edit changes in the schedule, and tie up any loose ends before convention. The location of the SPM will be selected at the FPM.

The beginning and the end. This year's National Convention is held on July 27 to August 1 at Indiana University Bloomington. Prepare for daily meetings, minimal sleep, and fun. Next year's convention will be at Troy University in AL.
