the road to

INAUGURATION

The road to being elected a National Officer is a fun albeit lengthy one. After you've decided you want to run for office, you will need to take the following steps:

a step-by-step guide to running for office

Before Convention:

First you must talk to your local sponsor and your own parents or guardian for their support in your interest in running for office. You must also contact your state chairs and gain their support for your nomination. Some states may handle this differently, since you may not be the only one in your state that wants to run for National Office. Talk to your State Chair and check out the state constitution for the specific procedure.

Afterwards, obtain a copy of the "NJCL NOMINATIONS FORM"on page 25 of the NJCL Chapter Handbook. If your local sponsor does not have a copy, you can obtain one from the NJCL website at njcl.org or email me personally for a copy at [email protected].

Fill out the form with the appropriate signatures and mail it to the NJCL Parliamentarian by JUNE 15. The mailing address is listed on page 4 of the Campaign Corner.

By June 20, you will receive an email from me verifying that you are eligible and have been pre-filed to run for office. Also, enclosed in that email will be a list of all the candidates for all the offices. After this point you will have the opportunity to change the office you are seeking, if you so choose.

Afterward until convention, feel free to begin preparing your campaign and working on your speeches. You will need a two-minute speech for the Nominations Committee and a three-minute speech for the general assembly. next page>>
