Peterson, Emerald

Emerald Petersen is a sophomore majoring in Computer Science and English. She is from Minnesota. She selected her three poems from random collections she found in Special Collections and then chose the ones with the most powerful and emotional vocabulary. Through their powerful and emotional vocabulary, she was able to see vivid images of what was occurring in the three poems that she selected--from disaster to failed love.

Pint, Greta

Greta Pint is a senior studying English at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She chose three poems from the version of the Mirror of Magistrates that was printed by William Baldwin in 1578. This collection of poems appealed to her because the content exposed historical tragedies through the voices of several prominent English public figures. Greta specifically chose to include two poems relating to Richard II and Henry Percy because of her interest in the literary representations of the two individuals in Shakespeare’s history plays.

Van Roy, Jennifer

Jennifer Van Roy is originally from Hayward, Wisconsin, but has lived in Madison for over 12 years and intends to stay. She is an English Literature and Afro-American Studies major. She hopes you enjoy her findings. She chose these poems firstly because of their aesthetic appeal. Upon a closer look, you can see the strict restraints the authors must stay within when creating figure poems. These restrictions sometimes mean changing the spelling, altering the spacing, and certainly being conscious of word choice. It is a playful exercise for both the writer and reader.

Vail, Tegan

Tegan Vail is a Junior majoring in English and Spanish. She originally chose the Ben Jonson poems because of the way the titles formed a succession: “To Penshurts”, a community poem, “To the World”, a large perspective poem, and “To Heaven”, an end of life poem. The poems were originally published in that order in The Forrest, a part of Jonson’s Epigrammes, and she chose them because it was an interesting representation of the progression of space, time and ideas throughout Jonson’s writing.

Vaudreuil, Angie

Angie Vaudreuil is a senior from Bloomington, MN majoring in English and Environmental Studies. She chose her poems first for the sound and second for the content. Angie loves poetry that sounds lyrical but also must have content that she finds insightful. Poetry is a way to understand life in the Renaissance and to take that interpretation to form an understanding of our own modern life.
