YOUR LATEST SERIES OF CAKES
HAS FOCUSED ON FOOD CAKES
(YOU KNOW, THE ONES THAT MESS
WITH YOUR HEAD BECAUSE YOU
EXPECT TO EAT A PLATE OF PASTA
AND END UP WITH A SPOONFUL
OF CAKE!) WHAT INSPIRED THIS
TREND FOR YOU?
Yes, I became slightly obsessed with
the food cakes! I think what got me
into these types of cakes the most is
the reaction is got from people. If you
create something that is very relatable
to people (like a popular food) out of
cake it really messes with people’s
minds, even my own. I always loved
illusions as a kid and I just love the
impact of when you cut into one of
these sculptures to reveal it’s not
actually all that it seemed.
MANY OF YOUR CAKES FEATURE
HYPER-REALISTIC FEATURES,
PARTICULARLY YOUR SCULPTED
BUST CAKES. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP
TIPS FOR CREATING REALISTIC
FACIAL FEATURES?
I have never been the best at hyper
realism and I always tend to lean more
towards caricature; however when
I have created hyper realism in the
past my top tips would be totake your
time... and measure.... in the worst
for this myself but when doing hyper
realism it’s so important. Make sure
you are looking from all angles and
step back from the piece every now
and then. Also, just build one area at a
time.
