Presiding at liturgical prayer is a challenging endeavor. Liturgy uses language, music and symbols to
facilitate an encounter with The Divine. Consequently, presiding is an action of the entire person, bodily,
spiritually, and affectively. Fr. Zampelli brings his experience as a presider and university professor in
performance studies to facilitate the development of presidential skills of participants.
Michael Zampelli, SJ is the Paul L. Locatelli University Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance
at Santa Clara University where he has been on the faculty since 1998. He teaches courses in
performance studies and theatre history, and his scholarship on the intersection between theatre and
religion/spirituality has appeared in journals and several book volumes. At present, he is working on the
retrieval of Jesuit performance traditions in 19th- and early 20th-century US educational institutions. He
serves on the Boards of Trustees at Marquette University and Loyola Marymount University. Michael
entered the Society of Jesus in 1982 and was ordained apriest in 1993. He has served the Diocese of
