Watchfulness In Ministry
D. Jason, Missionary, Blessing Youth Mission

inistries are given by God (John 3:27). He calls
individuals and anoints them. He is the Ministry-
Giver. No ministry can spring by itself. Planning
meetings or committee meetings cannot birth
ministries. God is the initiator. He uses a group or an
individual to build a ministry. When God uses us, we
need to be very careful as a faithful 'steward' (1 Cor
4:2). Stewards are not owners but are people in
charge for a given period of time. They need to give an
account one day. We should never forget that we are
all stewards in the kingdom of God. As stewards, we
need to carefully watch over the 'Ministry' that God
has given us (Acts20:28).
As ministries are entrusted to us, we
need to be watchful in several areas. Let us meditate
the areas in which we need to be watchful from the life
of David. David was anointed by God and was used
by Him to establish the kingdom of Israel. David
unified the kingdom and instituted worship at
Jerusalem. He subdued the enemies of Israel and
fought the Lord's battles. God made him a 'Shepherd-
king' to lead and guide His people, the Israelites. But
there were crisis points in the life of David. Let us
meditate those occasions so that we may be watchful
in our ministerial life.
impatient. They are anointed and gifted. But they do
not know to 'wait'. “Patience is a virtue we learn by
being patient”.
Many may rise up against a God-
ordained ministry. But we should not fight back in
flesh. Our fight is in the heavenly places. No man is
our enemy. Our adversary is the Devil. We need to
learn to battle on our knees.
We should not take any decision based
on flesh. If we would take this route, we would lose
our God-given graces. Let us always be focused on
our calling and gifting and be a blessing to people.
People might speak against us, or defame or criticize
us. But let us not become negative. Let us not treat
those people as our enemies.
1) Decisions Based On Flesh
We have all started in the Spirit. It was God who
gave us the burden and vision for the ministry.
Therefore we need to be continuously led by the
Spirit. We should not be led by our flesh. The
manifestations of flesh are very explicit sexual
impurity, anger, retribution, jealousy, paying back,
vengeance etc.,(Gal 3:3, 5:19). Let not the flesh
overtake the Spirit.
We learn this eternal lesson from the life
of David. Though Saul fought against David, he did
not fight back. He ran away. He knew he had been
anointed as the king. But he waited for his time. Saul
wanted to kill David and hunted him down. But David
escaped unhurt. David had two occasions in which he
could have killed Saul, but he refrained (1 Sam 24:4,
26:8-10). He waited for God's time. Today, we have
too many Davids in the Kingdom of God who are
It is said that when Dr. Billy Graham was
conducting mass evangelistic crusades, another man
of God was skeptical about Dr. Graham's method of
evangelism and wrote against him. But Dr. Graham
was magnanimous enough to meet the person and
learn from him. Eventually that person became part of
the Dr. Graham's crusade team and was in charge of
the individual follow-up ministries for several years.
This is how we go from strength to strength.
Proverbs 13:18 “Poverty and disgrace come to him
who ignores instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is
honored.”
Proverbs 15:31 “The ear that listens to life-giving
reproof will dwell among the wise.”
