Usually, the rift is made of alluvium or stream deposits, mainly containing sand and gravel as well as variety of other materials, such as fine particles of silt and clay. The rift crosses the river bed, and has the shape of a descent, either gradual or steep one. Rifts are characteristic of meandering rivers; often, they are located in the places of river bed widening, closer to its mouth tributaries. Mostly, rifts move down the river with floods. The speed of such movements can vary from a few dozens of centimetres to hundreds of metres per year.
