NIGHT AT THE CASABLANCA Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay, Sat 1 Nov Admission: £17.50/£15 adv. Info: 029 2063 6464 / www.wmc.org.uk As we are rapidly reaching the 10th anniversary of the Wales Millennium Centre’s opening, it begs the question: how should an achievement like this be celebrated appropriately? Well, they’ve managed to pull it off... You could argue culture and music are the heart and soul of Cardiff: a vessel upon which people were brought together, a collective cluster of people from different communities drawn together by the essence of their city. For the Tiger Bay residents who frequented the Casablanca nightclub from the 1960s until the 80s, that essence was to be found right there. So now the stage of the Donald Gordon Theatre will transform into the famous Butetown ballroom in tribute to the memories and experiences shared there. Night At The Casablanca tells the story of a former Butetown resident who, on returning to Butetown with friends, re-visits the Casablanca, which results their retelling of the after-dark delights the venue used to provide. The show uses a combination of true stories from the Butetown residents set to toetapping tunes over the last 50 years and a tribute to Welsh talent. The talk of this tribute has sparked local residents to tell their own tales of alcohol, antics, music and movement. Night... appeals to all ages – even those born after the club was closed down can appreciate the show’s theme, the importance of enjoying yourself and how places can lay the foundations for lasting memories and deep connections. There’ll be performances from local artists in one unforgettable evening of soul, gospel, reggae, swing, jazz and everything in between.
