DYLAN THOMAS FESTIVAL
Famous 20th Century poet Dylan Thomas, well known for works such as Do
Not Go Gently Into That Good Night, is celebrated in his hometown of Swansea
annually during the Dylan Thomas Festival. This year the festival, hosted by the
Dylan Thomas Centre, runs from Sat 27 Oct until Sat 9 Nov. There will be plenty of
poetry readings, workshops, guest speakers, music, and drama. All to celebrate
one of the most known and loved Welsh writers.
On top of this will also be a trip to Thomas’s local, The Uplands Tavern, where
people can celebrate Thomas’s life and works in the most logical way possible –
with plenty of drinks. To finish off the celebrations on Fri 8 Nov is Wordy Shapes
of Women – a collaboration between the Dylan Thomas Centre and Swansea’s
burlesque company Bluestocking Lounge. The night will provide burlesque acts
inspired by Thomas’s poetry and other Welsh-themed performances.

IL-LUMEN-ATING DIGITAL ART
The words ‘digital’ and ‘fine art’ aren’t two words you might
normally put together, but as we live in an increasingly
technological age the boundaries of art are constantly
expanding, and it’s inevitable that these two concepts are
fusing together. The Lumen Prize – which was established
last year by Cardiff based entrepreneur Carla Rapoport – is
the first digital fine art prize in the world, with the awards to
be held at ArcadeCardiff this October. The nominees include
Cardiff-based artist David Gould, whose work Skirmish looks
at realism, repetition, small movements and flows, and the
inconsequential details of everyday life. As these works have
to be created digitally, The Lumen Prize provides a fascinating
insight into how artists use and manipulate digital technology
to create .

Burning The Wicker Man
EVENT
For one night each year hordes of people carry out Pagan rituals whilst children
walk the streets demanding sugar-based gifts, dressed as orange vegetables and
the like. In celebration of this ancient festival of ghosts and high blood sugar, St
Fagans will be hosting their annual Halloween event, Burning The Wicker Man,
which is a tradition of burning an enormous replica of the human sacrifice pyres
favoured by our ancestors.
In an event which, rather unnervingly, mirrors the suspenseful plot of a certain 1973
film, crowds are invited to encircle a tower of newspaper, representing a live human,
and encouraged to cheer and shout as it burns to the ground. With four days of
events leading up to the climactic inferno, including a tour of the darker corners of
the museum’s collections, and children invited to help build the sacrificial murdertower, St Fagans are doing Halloween pretty well.
