SHAKESPEARE GOES SOUTH
With a powerful combination of Shakespeare’s tragic play and the vibrant setting of South
Asia comes Phizzical’s Cymbeline. Based on the Bard’s bizarrely farcical tale of innocence,
jealousy, ghosts and murder, director Sâmir Bhamra’s new adaptation shifts the plot to the
courts of India to tell the tale of a foolish king and the woes of his kingdom.
When Princess Innogen marries without her father’s permission her husband is banished
and, with her reputation tarnished, Innogen is forced to disguise herself as a boy and seek
employment outside of the confines of court. With Innogen performing a Juliet-like return to
life and Jupiter descending upon an Eagle, the plot of this play is somewhat convoluted but
with originally composed songs and a strong background in dance Phizzical have a knack
for putting on a good show. With a large-scale Hollywood adaptation of the play underway,
Cymbeline looks set to be the next Shakespeare tale that everyone goes crazy for.
