POWYS ARTS MONTH
Brace yourselves: culture is coming.
Specifically, we’re referring to the
Powys Arts Month, which features
a smorgasbord of events and
happenings almost too numerous to
mention.
There’s plenty on offer with numerous
Open Studio events – at which
members of the public can observe
local artists crafting their works.
Music won’t be forgotten either and
you can get some baroque at The
Twentieth Crickhowell Music Festival
from Thurs 1 to Mon 5 May, or some
more family friendly pop at Landed
Festival from Fri 2 to Sun 4 May.
There will also be talks, comedy,
performances of Shakespeare, and
some slightly more obscure forms of
artistic expression.
For example – have you have
dreamed of seeing a theatre show
in the belly of a giant inflatable pig?
No me neither, but I do now I know
about PIG and their 30ft long sow/
theatre, which they will be bringing
along to the Royal Welsh Spring
Festival in Builth Wells on Sun 18 and
Mon 18 May.
Various venues across Powys,
Thurs 1-Sat 31 May. Admissions:
free. Info: www.powysartsmonth.

THE BIG PICTURE
ART
ART
If you notice an unusually high number of Kodak-wielding,
snap-happy weirdos around Cardiff towards the end of May,
don’t worry. The city is scheduled to once again host the annual
Photomarathon UK event, which has become something of a
tradition since its inception in 2004.
The competition is billed as “12 topics, 12 hours, 12 pictures”,
with the intention of bringing out as much creativity as possible.
Close to 2000 people have taken part since the first event, with
approximately 30,000 images captured in its 10-year history. The
switch from film to digital was made in 2010, although film purists
will be accommodated this year with a limited number of places.
The images will then be displayed at an exhibition at the Cardiff
Story Museum from Sat 21 June-Fri 25 July.
Hosted at the Wales Millennium Centre, Photomarathon UK 2014
has 400 places available for digital entrants, so if it sounds like
your cup of tea, be sure to enter early. GG
Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay, Sat 31 May. Entry:
£17.50. Info: www.photomarathon.co.uk
ART CAR BOUTIQUE
EVENT
Car boot sales aren’t just about muddy fields and haggling
over the price of a second-hand lamp, especially if
Something Creative and Chapter Arts Centre have anything
to do with it. With 70 pitches selling vintage gems and works
of art, caterers serving up scrumptious street food, as well
as a whole host of musicians and performers to boot, Art
Car Bootique is the coolest car boot sale that you will ever
set your eyes upon.
Established in 2011, the annual boot sale is to be held in
the Chapter Arts Centre car park in Canton. The event, a
celebration of Cardiff’s creative community, will see the
ordinary car park transformed into a psychedelic village fete
with its very own bandstand. If you can only make it after
hours then fear not as evening events will commence from
6pm in Chapter’s Caffi Bar. JH
Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff, Sun 25 May. Admission: free.
