How did you all meet and what was the inspiration behind the Kitsch N Synch Collective? Rosalind Haf Brooks: I met Kylie and Kim from being part of the independent dance community in Cardiff. There are so many people performing and creating work and you get to know everyone really well and find great friends who you share a passion with. Kim Noble: We came together because we all share an interest in making work that’ s off the wall and diverse, and as performers we share similar skills. Not to mention we all have a great time working together! Kylie Ann Smith: We spent hours coming up with the name Kitsch N Sync. We wanted an umbrella name to encompass all the things we wanted to create. Our work fuses various dance genres with theatre and comedy, making full-length shows, festival outdoor pieces, walkabout characters and club acts, creative marketing events as well as bespoke performances. We literally provide everything but the kitchen sink.
How do you go about conceiving performance ideas? Kylie: We are really inspired by music. We tend to use a lot of electroswing tracks in our work as we like to take inspiration from the past and give it a contemporary twist. In our choreography we love to play with rhythm. We all trained in ballet, tap, jazz and contemporary dance when we were younger and it still feeds into our work now. We enjoy improvising and experimenting with quirky retro props such as space hoppers, scooters and roller skates! Vintage fashion trends and playing with costume design is also a huge influence on creating quirky characters for our shows.
What have you got lined up for the coming months? Rosalind: We are performing our PSEUDO SYNCRO outdoor or piece at Swansea Dance Days on Sat 13 and Sun 14 July. It’ s a comedy dance performance inspired by Busby Berkley, the military and synchronised swimming. We have also been commissioned by Coreo Cymru to make two new pieces for the Blysh festival in Cardiff Bay, which we will be performing from Tues 2-Thurs 4 July around the WMC. Keep a look out for some leather clad ladies on scooters and our retro dating booths! You may also catch our roller skating hairdressers in and around the Speigeltent on Sun 21 July.
