COWBRIDGE MUSIC FESTIVAL
Cowbridge Music Festival returns for a fifth
year with loads of enjoyable classical acts.
Festival Camerata opens the festival on Wed
10 Sept, with pieces by Tchaikovsky and Bach,
helped by the atmosphere and acoustics of
the venue – the Holy Cross Church. Also
playing at the festival is the comic and pianist
Hyun-ki Joo (with his curiously named show
One Carry-on Bag Only), welsh pianist Llyr
Williams, and European quartet Chiaroscuro
Quartet – led by violinist Alina Ibragimova.
For a taste of Jazz make sure to catch King
Candy And The Sugar Push who will be
bringing some swing to the festival with the help
EVENT
of Pupini Sister vocalist Kate Mullins on Fri 19
Sept.
In between concerts the musicians will
be attending schools where they will be
encouraging children to pursue music and
showing them what it has to offer. So bring
some friends and take in some good music,
and enjoy the friendly environment of the
Cowbridge Music Festival.

MUSIC
EYEING UP THE EISTEDDFOD
Wales’ oldest cultural festival (it’s over 150 years old – to put that in
perspective, the first National Eisteddfod was held in the same year that
Abraham Lincoln became president) comes around again, this time making
its home in Llanelli.
Welsh music will be getting its fair share of the limelight during the
Eisteddfod’s mini music festival Maes B; where singer-songwriter Al Lewis
and his band will be bringing his modern folk tunes, Cardiff band Colorama
will be blasting out their upbeat psychadelia and indie lovelies Swnami shall
be hitting the stage.
The festival will also have plenty more musical performances, as well as all
sorts of activities centred on dance, the arts and literature.
If you’re still pretty new to the world of the Welsh language there will also be
a centre for Welsh learning on site, so you can brush up on more than your
‘cwtch’s and your ‘popty ping’s.
The National Eisteddfod Of Wales, Millennium Coastal Park, Llanelli, Fri
1-Sat 9 Aug. Tickets: individual concerts £6-£18 / day ticket £10-£15 /
eight-day ticket £30-£100. Info: www.eisteddfod.org.uk
MEDIEVAL MELEE
EVENT
Weapons at the ready: step back in time 700 years with the Grand
Medieval Melee and enter a world full of swordfighting, soldiers, maidens
and table games.
Visitors to Cardiff Castle will get to experience a working medieval village
and be greeted with the sights, sounds and smells of the age in question.
Among some of the sights will be re-enactments of battles, where
ferocious knights will have their strengths and talents put to the test.
Within the village, life seems to run as normal as maidens help their
soldiers prepare for battle and perform their everyday chores of cooking
and weaving.
The more adventurous members of the audience will be able to have-ago at archery or sit back and listen to some story-telling. Regardless of
whether you’re a history fan or not, the Melee should at least have all the
excitement of a good old fashioned swordfight.
Grand Medieval Melee 2014, Cardiff Castle, Sat 16 + Sun 17 Aug.
Tickets £2-£6. Info: www.cardiffcastle.com
