THE BEST OF
THE SUMMER
The Big Tribute Festival
It’s a sad statement to
make but the fact is
that August brings with
it the last bank holiday
of the summer. So now
is the chance to make
the most of that last
day of freedom. Rachel
Williams and Sarah
Hazelwood has a look
at of some of the events
on offer during the bank
holiday weekend.
CINEMA BY THE SEA
If you’re looking for some movie entertainment but
don’t want to deal with the ‘it’s a summers day
I can’t sit inside a dark room for several hours’
dilemma, then catch some Cinema By The Sea in
Barry. The themed weekender will be showing the
family favourite The Goonies and Abba inspired
Musical Mamma Mia. Visitors are also welcome to
bring their own picnics, so they’re no forking out a
fiver for a spoonful of popcorn.
Barry Island Gardens, 8.30pm, Sat 23 +

THE BIG TRIBUTE FESTIVAL
ARCHERY AT THE CASTLE
This isn’t just a tribute... it’s The Big Tribute; a festival
dedicated to the best and biggest tribute acts. It’s also,
believe it or not, Wales’ ONLY tribute festival.
The eclectic range of performers includes Sir Tom,
Maybe Gaga, Hot Red Chili Peppers, Mentallica,
Kings Ov Leon and Antarctic Monkeys – and their just
the bands with the best wordplay in their names. While
the main stage dedicates itself to the creative copycats,
the Second Stage will be showcasing the best local upand-comers as home grown talent strut their stuff.
It’s a fun-loving festival that doesn’t take itself too
seriously (there’s even an official fancy dress day) and
you get to sing along to all your favourite hits, at the
tops of your lungs with everyone else in the audience.
Take our your anger at the lack of free days off work
by picking up a bow and arrow at White Castle in
Monmouthshire, and having a go at archery. As well
as pretending your target is whoever’s job it is to
make bank holidays you can spend the day finding
out what it was like to survive in the medieval world
and learn how to use the ultimate medieval weapon.
Challenge the professionals and test out your new
archery skills, if you’re brave enough.
