HOT 8 BRASS BAND
Moon Club, Cardiff. Thurs 18 July words GARETH LUDKIN photos GARETH JARVIS Oxygen was at a premium and sweat glands put to the test as the packed out Moon Club hosted the much anticipated arrival of Hot 8 Brass Band at the start of their UK and Europe-wide tour on yet another sweltering evening in Cardiff. With the helpful backing of funk and soul tastemakers Tru Thoughts, The New Orleans brass juggernaut have been consistently picking up fans over recent months and years with their playful approach to the big brass band sound of their hometown; taking in classic covers as well as originals to create a horny assault on the senses. Props must go to Full Moon for securing Hot 8 to play their first UK date in Cardiff. Ever since Youngblood Brass Band tore up Cardiff’ s Globe in 2009, the capital’ s music scene has been crying out for a gig of such brassinfused. Bearing witness to a renaissance of powerful brass bands such as Youngblood and Hypnotic making a name for themselves in the‘ mainstream’, the sold out Cardiff crowd were certainly pumped for the occasion and ready to show their appreciation. In support, Iron Eye provided a riotous warm-up to get the crowd in the groove. The compact and talented group – simply comprised of a drummer and tenor and baritone sax duo – blasted through original tracks alongside inventive covers packed full of off-beat syncopated rhythm led by the group’ s serenely talented drummer. Fluxing between upbeat crowd-pleasers and jazzier beat excursions, Iron Eye set the evening on the right track ahead of Hot 8’ s arrival on stage. By the time Hot 8 appeared on stage, the Moon Club was already at premium roasting temperature, but the crowd were more than game for the heat and ready to soak it up as Hot 8 blasted into their set with Rock With The Hot 8. The rising chorus of horns hit every corner of the Moon Club, with each member combining to demonstrate their inimitable New Orleans sound. With the likes of Get Up and Love Don’ t Live Here from their latest album Rock With The Hot 8 whipping the crowd into a frenzy, the set moves with pace and vigour. Sweltering under the lights, Hot 8 appear a little uncomfortable, but they plough on regardless as the crowd continue to jive and call for more water from the bar. A hot, sweaty hit of a show, it was great to see Cardiff so in tune with the New Orleans sound and the powerhouse Hot 8.
